The FDA publishes 510(k)s and premarket approvals in a public database (accessdata.fda.gov). It's searchable by device name, company, and indication. For class II and III devices—including dental implant systems—the clearance document specifies the intended use. That matters more than people realize.

Nobody had checked—not us, not the distributor. The device wasn't unsafe, but it also wasn't cleared for what the clinic planned to do with it.

Step 3: Ask how the technology actually works

But the differences between systems matter: mydriatic versus non-mydriatic capture, illumination wavelength, image resolution, software that compensates for patient movement, and whether the device captures peripheral retinal images or only the posterior pole.

If the rep can't explain it, they won't be able to help your clinical team when the image quality is inconsistent, or when someone needs to troubleshoot the workflow at 7 AM.

Cross-check the vendor's explanation against an independent source. If the vendor's explanation matches the independent description, you've got a signal. If it doesn't, flag it.

Step 4: Ask what's NOT included before you ask the price

  • Spare parts availability commitment (5, 7, or 10 years)
